Swimming is banned at beaches in El Médano and Los Abrigos due to faecal bacteria

The City Council of Granadilla de Abona has announced this afternoon that they are prohibiting swimming in the sea at two beaches in the municipality due to high readings of E.coli which were above the permitted level. They have provisionally closed the Leocadio Machado beach in El Médano, and the main Los Abrigos beach until further notice.

The contamination was detected after results from routine testing were submitted earlier today, and have decided to close the beaches as a precaution after other beaches further north on the east coast were also closed after excessive amounts of faecal bacteria were found in the water.

New tests are ongoing and they will be reopened to the public once the levels are seen as normal. This is the second time in a month that a beach in El Medano has been closed to the public for this reason.
