In a joint effort between the National Police and the Guardia Civil, members of the Port Police who patrol the Port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, have foiled 60 attempts by migrants to access ships in first eight days of the current month, by hiding under containers, inside refrigerator lorries, and on top of trucks to name but a few ways.
If February's figures are taken into account, the number of these attempts to ‘escape’ to mainland Spain far exceeds a hundred, but the problem has multiplied since the start of March, presumably in relation to the mass transfers to the Temporary Attention Centres for Foreigners (CATE) of Las Raíces and Las Canteras, both in the municipality of La Laguna.
