Tenerife's emergency services have managed to rescue three people from the sea who were in distress in the El Tancón cave area, in Santiago del Teide, on the west coast of the island, including a woman in critical condition, but are looking for a fourth person, according to a 112 spokeswoman who informed the Efe news agency.

The emergency rescue took place yesterday afternoon outside the El Tancón Cave, which is renowned for extremely strong currents and swell, and has clear signs not to swim in the area or access the cave due to it being dangerous.

The rescue services were mobilized after an emergency call was received advising that four people were in trouble at sea in that part of the coast. Rescuers managed to recover and land three people, two of which have multiple contusions and some symptoms of semi-drowning, and the third, a woman, has been revived from a cardiorespiratory arrest after being given CPR, and has been transferred to the Hospital de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria in critical condition.

Last night the different emergency teams were still searching the area for a fourth person, who is still currently missing, and the search was resumed at first light this morning by a GES helicopter and a Maritime Rescue boat.
