49-year-old man missing in the Roque de los Muchachos hills in La Palma

The search for a 49-year-old man who disappeared on Tuesday in the Los Andenes area of the Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma, had to be called off due to the bad weather hitting the island making it inpossible for the search team to continue.

The man, a native of El Paso, is a teacher at an educational centre in Garafía and, according to friends, is fond of hiking and photography, hence it does not seem unusual that his car was found in that area.

However, the search team who were located at the palm tree peaks to find the teacher were forced to stop in the late afternoon due to poor visibility. The storm that is being experienced in the Islands, which has left its mark on La Palma with copious amounts of rain and snow, has hampered the work carried out by the teams co-ordinated by Cecopin.

Among the search party are personnel and volunteers from the Guardia Civil, fire-fighters based in the parks of La Grama and San Andrés, the Local Police of Garafía, and members of the Environment, Security and Emergencies and Roads services of the Cabildo, with support provided by the Red Cross.

Regarding the development of the search, Germán Pérez, chief of the Volunteer Fire-fighters of La Palma, said that "the weather conditions prevented carrying out a wide search, and did not allow drones to fly". Even so, he said he hopes that weather conditions will improve today.
