Gym and sports centre owners protest in Tenerife against their closure

Approximately 500 people, including staff, members, and owners of gymnasiums and sports centres, gathered this morning (Wednesday) in front of the Presidency Building in Santa Cruz to protest against the closure of gyms and sports centres, which have been inactive since December 19th due to the extra restrictions implemented to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The protesters called for the immediate re-opening of these centres with 50% of the capacity allowed to be used, a fact that ironically is already scheduled to happen from next Monday when the Governing Council changes Tenerife’s alert Level from 3 to 2.

They also requested that this type of activity be considered essential, not just recreational, since many people need to go to gyms to improve or rehabilitate not just their physical health, but their mental health too, during the ongoing pandemic, which would prevent them from having to close again.

After stopping outside the building of the Presidency of the Government, they moved to the building of the Cabildo, where they continued the demonstration which was carried out in an orderly fashion with no need for police intervention.
