VIDEO: Reports of an outbreak of fire in La Palma

Update: 15.33H Tuesday 17.08.2021
The mayor of El Paso, Sergio Rodríguez, has called for “caution and prudence” on 'Canarias Radio' since the origin of the fire is confirmed as being from a cigarette butt thrown from a car. "This cannot happen," he added.

The flames have not reached houses as yet and mainly affect agricultural land and stubble areas, but the strong wind and high temperature are making it difficult to put out.

Some homes have been evicted as a precaution because they belong to elderly people and people with mobility difficulties, sources from the Cabildo have confirmed to Europa Press.

It’s the thing everyone dreads when weather conditions are like this, a fire has been declared at midday today (Tuesday) in the municipality of El Paso in La Palma. Firefighters and Emergency personnel are already working on site to try to put it out, and the Cabildo has informed on Twitter that two helicopters have travelled to the area to collaborate with the extinction efforts.

La Palma is one of five of the Canary Islands currently on high alert for extreme temperatures and the maximum risk of fires. According to the Cabildo de La Palma, the flames are affecting "low vegetation and apparently originated at the back of a house."
