The first snowfall of autumn left a thin white covering around Teide’s summit yesterday, Thursday, providing a striking contrast to the warm conditions along Tenerife’s coast. The snow was limited to the highest part of the mountain.
Today, the unsettled weather of recent days will gradually give way to brighter conditions, although northern parts of the mountainous islands could still see some light rain.
The Canary Islands Government has announced that its rain alert for El Hierro, La Gomera and eastern La Palma, together with the rain pre-alert covering the remaining islands, will end at 7am today.
The higher alert level came into force at midnight on Thursday because of the risk of heavy showers and thunderstorms. Its withdrawal reflects an improvement in conditions, rather than a completely dry forecast everywhere.
TENERIFE
Northern and north-eastern Tenerife will remain cloudier, with light rain that could linger in some places. Anyone heading towards Puerto de la Cruz or Anaga should allow for a different day from that forecast along the southern coast.
Elsewhere, clearer skies will bring better prospects for outdoor plans, including around the southern and western resorts. Temperatures will remain similar to yesterday or rise slightly, with highs of 27°C and a minimum of 23°C.
North-easterly winds will be moderate, becoming stronger at times on exposed north-western and south-eastern slopes during the afternoon.
GRAN CANARIA
The north will have the greatest cloud cover, with a small chance of light rain. Las Palmas and the northern coastal towns therefore have a less consistently sunny outlook than the south.
Much of the rest of the island should enjoy clearer skies, offering a brighter day around Maspalomas, Playa del Inglés and the south-western resorts. Temperatures will change little in the north and edge upwards elsewhere, ranging from 23°C to 26°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds could strengthen along exposed north-western and south-eastern slopes this afternoon.
LANZAROTE
Lanzarote will have a mixture of sunshine and passing cloud, with only a low probability of an occasional shower. The forecast offers a generally encouraging outlook for sightseeing and time outdoors around Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca.
Temperatures will remain steady or rise slightly, particularly overnight, and are forecast to reach 27°C, with a minimum of 21°C.
A moderate north-easterly breeze will accompany the brighter spells. Visitors choosing a beach should take account of how exposed it is to the wind, rather than relying on temperature alone.
FUERTEVENTURA
Fuerteventura also has a forecast of sunny intervals and passing cloud. An occasional shower remains possible, but the likelihood is low.
Temperatures will show little change or rise slightly, especially the minimum values, ranging between 22°C and 25°C.
Moderate north-easterly winds will keep a noticeable breeze along exposed stretches of coast. For plans around Corralejo, Caleta de Fuste, Costa Calma and Morro Jable, sunshine should be balanced against local wind conditions.
