Covid update: 108 new cases and one death in the last 24 hours

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, there have been 108 new cases of coronavirus detected in the Canary Islands in the last 24 hours, and one Covid related death in Tenerife. The R rate of contagion has jumped sharply this week and is now at 1.16 meaning that everyone with Covid on average now passes it on to more than one person.

Of the new cases, there are 52 in Tenerife, 26 in Gran Canaria, 9 in Lanzarote, 5 in Fuerteventura, and none in La Gomera or El Hierro. The biggest surprise is an outbreak in a nursing home in La Palma that has affected 16 people, both staff and residents of the centre, who have been isolated as per protocols.

There have also been two notable outbreaks in Tenerife this week, the first in a socio-health centre with family ramifications, with 24 people infected; and another at Hospiten Sur with 16 people affected, including 5 patients, 7 staff, and 4 family members.

Active cases have continued to go up and there are now 947 infected people in the archipelago as the number being discharged has slowed down. Incidence rates have also increased again, particularly in Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and Tenerife.

Some people think that, at least Lanzarote, is lucky to still be in Level 1 after today’s review of the alert levels, and the press release stated that the Ministry of Health ‘agreed’ to keep them in that level, allegedly only for another week unless new cases and incidence rates come down again.
