A 73-year-old woman has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after accidentally driving a sit-on electric scooter into the sea at Puerto Colón in Costa Adeje, southern Tenerife.

According to the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES), the incident happened at around 2:20pm on Sunday when the woman reportedly lost control of the scooter while travelling through the marina.

She fell into the water and was quickly rescued by crew members from a nearby moored boat before emergency services arrived.

SUC paramedics from the treated her at the scene after she showed signs of severe drowning. Once stabilised, she was transferred to Tenerife Sur hospital for further treatment.

The woman's current condition has not been updated beyond being described as serious. It has also not been confirmed if she was on a blue badge mobility scooter or an electric scooter from a hire shop.

Officers from the Local Police attended the scene and have opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The incident serves as a reminder for pedestrians and mobility scooter users to take extra care in busy marina areas, where narrow walkways and waterside edges can present additional hazards.
