A 65-year-old woman has died after drowning at Playa del Inglés, in the south of Gran Canaria, this morning (Monday), according to the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination and Security Centre (CECOES) 1-1-2.
Firefighters rescued the woman from the water using a jet ski after she was found in cardiorespiratory arrest. Once on dry land, medical staff carried out basic and advanced CPR attempts, but were unable to revive her, and her death was confirmed at the shore.
Emergency services were alerted just before 9 am, when a call to the 112 emergency number reported that a person was in difficulty in the water. Several emergency teams were immediately sent to carry out the rescue.
Several serious drowning incidents have been reported in Gran Canaria this year. Emergency services confirmed the deaths of swimmers at beaches including Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas, while lifeguards and firefighters have also carried out multiple rescues at Las Canteras beach in Las Palmas after people were caught in strong currents.
In other cases, bathers were pulled from the water in critical condition and taken to hospital, with authorities repeatedly pointing to rough sea conditions, rip currents and failure to respect warning flags as common factors.
