A 71-year-old woman is in a critical condition following a serious fire in a residential apartment block in the south of Tenerife. A second woman was also injured and taken to hospital with moderate smoke inhalation.
The fire broke out on Tuesday evening (13th January), at around 7.30pm, in an apartment located on Calle Casiano Alfonso Hernández in Las Galletas, as reported by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).
Emergency services received several calls alerting them to the blaze in a multi-storey residential building. Due to the seriousness of the incident, emergency resources were immediately deployed to the scene.
When responders arrived, the Guardia Civil had already evacuated the building as a precaution. Firefighters then began tackling the flames, which completely destroyed one of the apartments.
SUC medical teams treated both women at the scene. The 71-year-old was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and was transferred by ambulance to Hospital del Sur, where she remains in a life-threatening condition.
The second woman also suffered smoke inhalation, although her condition was described as moderate, and was taken to the same hospital for further treatment.
An investigation into the cause of the fire has been launched. Authorities have not confirmed how the blaze started, and further information is expected as enquiries continue.
