A 52-year-old woman has been arrested in Maspalomas (Gran Canaria) after allegedly starting a fire in the apartment of a man who had been letting her stay with him for several days. According to the National Police the fire put the man and the other residents in the building at serious risk.

The incident happened after an argument between the woman and the homeowner. The man told police that the woman left the property following the row, and shortly afterwards the fire started inside the flat.

Neighbours Evacuated

When officers arrived, they found thick smoke coming from the property. Due to the danger, they quickly evacuated all neighbours from the building to keep everyone safe.

Fire crews, paramedics and local police all attended the incident and worked together to put out the blaze. Around 3,000 litres of water were used, and the flat was completely destroyed by the fire.

Woman Arrested Nearby

After the situation was brought under control, officers found the suspected woman close to the scene. She was arrested soon after, but police say she resisted and became aggressive, allegedly attacking one of the officers.

One police officer had to be taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation while helping evacuate residents.

The woman was first taken to a medical centre for checks and later referred for a psychiatric assessment before being moved into police custody.

She is now expected to appear in court accused of arson, making serious threats, and assaulting a police officer.
