A thick blanket of calima has covered the Canary Islands since Thursday, and conditions have still been severe today (Sunday), with very high levels of dust in the air expected to continue.
AEMET has issued yellow weather warnings across the entire archipelago, which have been extended into Monday for the eastern islands, alongside additional warnings for strong winds affecting northern Tenerife, La Palma and La Gomera.
Meanwhile, the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Security and Emergencies has activated a pre-alert for both calima and strong winds across all islands.
Island-by-Island Weather Warnings:
Gran Canaria
A yellow warning for calima is in place across the whole island, including coastal areas and higher ground, from midnight until 8:59pm on Monday. Visibility is expected to drop to around 3,000 metres, particularly in mid-level and high areas, though it may also affect lower areas.
Tenerife
Similar calima warnings cover the entire island, including the metropolitan area, during the same timeframe. Visibility will be reduced to around 3,000 metres, mainly inland and at altitude.
A separate yellow warning for strong winds is also in force in the north from 10:00am Sunday until 3:59am Monday. Gusts could reach 70 km/h, with southern winds affecting central peaks and northern slopes. In higher areas, gusts may exceed 90–100 km/h.
Fuerteventura
The whole island is under a calima warning from midnight to 11:59pm on Monday, with visibility reduced to around 3,000 metres, especially inland.
Lanzarote
Identical calima warnings apply across the island throughout Sunday, with reduced visibility and dusty conditions.
The Calima is expected to ease during Monday with weather warnings deactivated by Tuesday.
