A 26-year-old man is in hospital after being beaten unconscious while trying to intervene in a fight in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Guanarteme area, when two friends witnessed a confrontation and attempted to step in.

Instead of stopping, the aggressors turned on them, which then turned into a violent assault.

The victim was repeatedly punched and kicked in the head and neck after being knocked to the ground on Joaquín Costa Street. Emergency medics rushed him to Hospital Doctor Negrín, where he remains admitted with head and abdominal injuries.

Witnesses described the attack as extremely violent, with one of the assailants even attempting to steal the victim’s watch before being confronted by a bystander.

The attackers fled on an electric scooter, but police patrols were quickly sent to the area. Thanks to witness descriptions, the National Police located and detained one of the suspects just metres away from where the attack took place.

The 27-year-old man, of North African origin, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery with violence and causing injury. Officers also found other stolen items in his possession. His accomplice remains at large as the investigation continues.

Witnesses have criticised the delay in the arrival of the ambulance, claiming it took 45 minutes from the moment they called for help. Local business owners have also voiced concern. They argued that a decline in security across the city in recent years is affecting businesses, residents, and visitors alike.

The Association of Restaurateurs of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ARES) has called on the city council to address the issue of urban safety, stressing that repeated incidents of theft and violence are putting both business owners and their staff at risk.

The National Police continue their search for the second attacker, while the victim remains in hospital under medical care.
