A private sailing boat was washed ashore on the sands of Playa de La Tejita, in the south of Tenerife, after powerful winds and rough seas pushed it towards the coastline on Thursday afternoon. The incident took place in El Médano, an area well-known among tourists for its wide beach and water-sports.
Authorities have confirmed that the Canary Islands have been under an official pre-alert for hazardous coastal weather throughout the week. The warning was issued due to a combination of large Atlantic swells, strong gusts, and unstable sea conditions.
Meteorologists reported wave heights of up to four metres in exposed areas, particularly along Tenerife’s eastern and southern coasts. Strong winds associated with a passing low-pressure system also created difficult conditions for boating, swimming, and wind-dependent sports. These factors likely contributed to the vessel being unable to maintain its course before ending up stranded on the beach.
No injuries were reported, and emergency services monitored the site while evaluating how to safely remove the boat during these unstable conditions.
Lifeguards and Civil Protection teams have been reminding both residents and visitors to take extra care near the shoreline, avoid swimming in red-flag conditions, and keep a safe distance from the grounded vessel.
Tourists are advised to stay alert to updated forecasts and heed local safety flags, as rough seas are expected to continue intermittently over the coming days. Beach conditions may change rapidly, particularly in open coastal areas like La Tejita.
