What should be a picture-perfect scene in one of Tenerife’s most iconic locations has instead sparked widespread outrage after a fridge was spotted floating in the sea off Los Gigantes.
The incident came to light after a video shared on TikTok by user @celsogonzalezmag showed the appliance drifting on the water near the cliffs in Santiago del Teide. Filmed from a small boat, the footage quickly gained thousands of views and prompted a wave of concern and anger online.
Far from being a bizarre one-off, the discovery has highlighted a growing environmental issue affecting the Canary Islands’ coastline.
Environmental concern in protected waters
The sighting is particularly alarming given that the waters around Los Gigantes are part of a protected area of high ecological value, home to a wide range of marine life, including whales, dolphins and sea turtles.
Experts warn that large debris such as a fridge poses a serious threat, with animals at risk of injury through collision or harm from ingesting toxic materials and plastics released as the appliance deteriorates.
Calls for greater responsibility
Environmentalists have described the incident as a stark example of declining public awareness when it comes to protecting natural spaces. Unlike smaller litter, the presence of such a large object in the ocean suggests either severe negligence or deliberate dumping.
The incident has reignited debate over coastal monitoring and enforcement, with growing calls for tougher action against those who treat the sea as a dumping ground.
Authorities have not yet confirmed how the appliance ended up in the water, but the images have already intensified pressure for stronger environmental protections across the islands.
