A 57-year-old man is in serious condition after being hit by a speedboat whilst swimming in the sea off the coast of Arona in the south of Tenerife, as reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).
The incident happened at around 4:45pm yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) close to the Punta de Rasca lighthouse which is when CECOES received an alert saying that the man had made it out of the water onto the rocks but needed urgent medical assistance for his injuries.
Due to the location and the seriousness of the incident, they dispatched a GES helicopter so that the injured man could receive treatment more quickly.
When they got there, the police coordinated the landing of the helicopter on the difficult terrain on that part of the coastline and found the man who had a serious leg injury with an open wound.
After giving him an initial assessment, they immediately flew him to the helipad at the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital where he has been admitted for further treatment.
The Guardia Civil have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident and would like to talk to the driver of the speedboat that ran over him in the water.
