The Guardia Civil’s Fiscal and Border Unit at Tenerife North Airport has arrested a 53-year-old man from Arona as he attempted to leave the island, after finding over 80 stolen smartphones hidden in his luggage.
The arrest took place during a routine check of hold luggage when officers noticed an unusually high number of electronic devices inside one suitcase. The passenger was located and asked to be present as his luggage was opened for inspection.
Inside, officers discovered a total of 89 electronic devices, including 88 high-end smartphones and a tablet, none of which the man could provide proof of ownership for. During a further search, a hidden compartment in one of his bags was found to contain €11,000 and £1,045 in cash. An additional €9,000 was also found in a money belt he was wearing.
Upon further investigation, many of the smartphones were confirmed as stolen, having been flagged in police databases. The man, who was preparing to board a flight to mainland Spain, was immediately detained and all items, including the cash totalling €21,246, were seized.
The suspect was charged with ongoing theft and appeared before the Court of Instruction No. 4 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
