A hiker was rescued on Wednesday after suffering a fall in a remote and hard-to-reach area of Los Gigantes, within the municipality of Santiago del Teide. The incident, which required the intervention of an emergency helicopter, was reported by the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The Government of the Canary Islands confirmed that the GES emergency helicopter was deployed to retrieve the injured hiker, who had sustained minor injuries and was successfully extracted from the rugged terrain.

Following the rescue operation, medical staff from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) transported the hiker to a nearby healthcare facility for further assessment and treatment.

Los Gigantes: A Popular Hiking Destination

Los Gigantes, known for its dramatic cliffs rising from the sea, is a popular destination for hikers. The area offers a variety of trails, ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs. However, the rugged terrain and potential for sudden changes in weather conditions can make hiking in Los Gigantes dangerous.

Hiking Safety Tips:

  • Plan your hike: Research the trail beforehand, check the weather forecast, and let someone know your plans.
  • Wear appropriate footwear: Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential.
  • Take plenty of water and snacks: Dehydration is a common risk, especially in warm weather.
  • Carry a first-aid kit and a map: Be prepared for unexpected situations.
  • Stay on marked trails: Avoid venturing off-trail, as this can increase the risk of injury or getting lost.
  • Be aware of your surroundings: Watch for loose rocks, uneven terrain, and potential hazards.
  • Turn back if you encounter difficulties: Don't push yourself too hard, especially if you are not experienced.

While specific statistics for rescues in Los Gigantes may be difficult to obtain, it's important to note that emergency services in Tenerife respond to numerous hiking incidents each year. These incidents can range from minor injuries to serious emergencies, such as falls, heatstroke, and hypothermia.
