In a late-night operation in Tenerife, officers from the Guardia Civil in Candelaria identified people caught on video illegally dumping industrial waste into the sea from the back of a van.
The incident occurred in a cove in La Viuda, on the east coast of Tenerife within the municipality of Candelaria.
The video, shared widely on social media, clearly showed the culprits unloading rubbish and debris from the back of a vehicle during the early hours of the morning, and tossing it into the sea.
Following an investigation, the Guardia Civil located and identified those involved who have been formally notified of a complaint for committing a serious infraction under Spain's Law 7/2022, of 8 April, on Waste and Contaminated Soils for a Circular Economy.
The law penalises acts such as the illegal dumping of waste, littering, and uncontrolled disposal of non-hazardous materials when there is no severe threat to human health or significant environmental damage.
This type of offence is classed as a serious infringement and carries potential fines ranging from €2,001 to €100,000, depending on the severity of the violation. The matter has been referred to the relevant authority responsible for imposing sanctions in such cases.
This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the police to enforce environmental laws and address irresponsible behaviour that endangers natural ecosystems. Authorities continue to encourage citizens to report such activities to ensure accountability and the preservation of the environment.
