The Tafira campus of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) was thrown into disarray this morning (Thursday) after a suspected bomb threat led to the urgent evacuation of several buildings.
Students and staff from the Faculties of Legal Sciences and Economics, along with library users, were ordered out of the facilities as the National Police officers rushed to the campus. The alert was caused by a suspicious email received through the university’s corporate system, causing an immediate security response.
Police specialists are now working with ULPGC’s internal security team to determine whether the threat is real or a malicious hoax. Only certain departments have been evacuated as a precaution, while the rest of the campus continues operating with extra caution.
The investigation remains active, with authorities yet to confirm the authenticity of the message that triggered the alarm.
In Gran Canaria, bomb threats are not entirely unheard of. In 2016, police arrested a man in Las Palmas for making a series of false bomb warnings that triggered multiple emergency responses across the city. Earlier, in 2008, a suspicious bag found in the historic district of Vegueta led to evacuations and a bomb squad intervention before it was declared a false alarm.
