A helicopter, three ambulances and fire crews were deployed yesterday afternoon (Saturday) following a serious road traffic accident on one of the main routes into El Medano, in the south of Tenerife.
The collision happened at around 1:00pm on the TF-64, the busy road linking San Isidro with El Medano, in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona.
Emergency services were alerted after several calls were made to the 112vemergency coordination centre (CECOES) reporting a crash involving two vehicles, one of which had overturned, on the well-known “El Médano straight”.
Two injured taken to hospital
As a result of the impact, two people travelling on a motorbike were injured.
Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), supported by medical staff from the San Isidro Health Centre, treated the casualties at the scene.
- A 50-year-old man suffered multiple moderate injuries and was taken by advanced life support ambulance to Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria.
- A 55-year-old woman also sustained moderate injuries and was transported by basic life support ambulance to the same hospital.
A third person involved in the incident was assessed at the scene but did not require hospital treatment, as their injuries were described as minor.
Firefighters free trapped occupant
The fire brigade were called to secure the overturned vehicle and free one of the occupants who had become trapped inside the car. After being extricated, the individual was found to be in good condition and did not require hospitalisation.
The two occupants of the second vehicle involved in the crash were able to leave the scene under their own steam.
Helicopter deployed and traffic disrupted
Given the initial reports of a potentially serious incident, the 112 service activated a medical helicopter, which landed near the TF-64 to provide advanced support alongside several ambulances.
The accident caused significant disruption to traffic in both directions. Officers from the Local Police managed road closures and diversions while vehicles were recovered and the road surface cleared.
An official report has been opened to determine the exact cause of the collision on what is one of the busiest roads in that part of the island.
