Two popular beaches in El Médano, located in the south of Tenerife, have been temporarily closed following issues with the local wastewater outfall system, according to an official announcement from the Granadilla de Abona Town Hall.
La Jaquita and La Batata beaches, both frequented by locals and tourists alike for their calm waters and beautiful setting, were shut down as a precautionary measure after a blockage was detected in the underwater emissary system.
The council has not provided a timeframe for when the beaches might reopen, stating that the closures will remain in place until the issue is fully resolved and public safety can be guaranteed.
“El Médano is known for its beaches and natural charm,” said a council spokesperson. “We understand this is disappointing, especially during the summer season, but the safety of beachgoers is our top priority.”
A Cautious Approach Amid Environmental Concerns
The decision to close the beaches follows technical reports indicating that the emissary, which is responsible for safely channelling treated wastewater away from the coast, was not functioning properly. While the town hall has assured that the situation is being monitored closely, bathing is currently prohibited on both beaches until further notice.
The council is urging the public to respect all signage and beach closures, noting that unauthorised access to the water could pose health risks.
El Médano Still Open for Visitors
Despite the closures, El Médano remains a vibrant beach town, with other areas such as Playa del Médano and Playa de Leocadio Machado still open and welcoming visitors. These beaches continue to offer ideal conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Tourism officials are encouraging visitors to make the most of the other accessible stretches of coastline, while also staying informed through local news outlets and council updates.
