Tragic end for bather on a Costa Adeje beach in the south of Tenerife

An 89-year-old man died yesterday (Tuesday) after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest while bathing off Diego Hernández beach, an isolated cove located in Costa Adeje, in the south of Tenerife.

The incident occurred around 4:45pm yesterday afternoon, which is when the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received a call alerting that a person was in trouble whilst swimming in the sea.

The necessary emergency resources were immediately activated, including an Emergency Rescue helicopter due to the difficulty of access to the beach on the coast of Adeje.

The crew from the helicopter airlifted the man from the sea and flew him to the helipad at the Adeje fire station, performing CPR on the way as he was in cardiorespiratory arrest after swallowing a large amount of seawater.

However, despite their efforts, SUC paramedics who were waiting at the helipad for their arrival could only confirm the man’s death as he couldn’t be revived.

From here, the Guardia Civil took charge of the corresponding judicial proceedings for the removal of the deceased for official identification and an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
