A man who stole a wallet from a parked car in the south of Tenerife was tracked down and arrested over the weekend, thanks to a GPS device hidden among the stolen items.

The incident occurred on Friday in San Isidro, when a couple briefly left their vehicle with a handbag inside.

In their rush, or perhaps out of habit, they left one of the windows partially open, an opportunity that was quickly taken advantage of by a local man.

The thief, who is a resident of Tenerife, reached into the car and took the handbag and wallet before heading to the busy tourist area of Playa de las Américas, where he reportedly spent more than €200 on alcoholic drinks in various nightlife venues.

Unbeknownst to him, one of the stolen items inside the wallet contained a GPS tracker. This allowed the victims to pinpoint his location on Saturday morning at a bar in Costa del Silencio.

They confronted the man, demanding the return of their belongings and warning him that police were on their way. The thief reportedly mocked the effectiveness of law enforcement, only to be met minutes later by officers from the Arona Local Police.

The man was detained at the scene and taken to the Playa de las Américas Civil Guard station, where the initial proceedings were carried out. He now faces charges relating to theft from a vehicle.
