For over 150 years, El Perola, located in Agaete, Gran Canaria, has been a symbol of tradition and heritage. As the oldest bar in the Canary Islands, stepping into its rustic interior feels like travelling back in time.
It has preserved its original structure and design, maintaining a charm that makes visitors feel as though even the glass bottles on its shelves have stories to tell.
One of El Perola’s most unusual customs has remained unchanged throughout its long history. The bar follows a peculiar ritual passed down from its original owner, a tradition upheld by its current proprietor, José Juan Domínguez Dámaso, known locally as Pepe El Perola.
Customers are encouraged to throw peanut shells onto the floor, as the original owner believed that the shells acted as a natural sawdust, making it easier to sweep up at the end of the day.
A Menu That Stands the Test of Time
Unlike modern eateries that constantly reinvent their menus, El Perola remains loyal to its culinary roots.
The bar offers a selection of dishes that have been served for several generations, including local cheese, ropa vieja (a traditional Canarian stew made with chickpeas), albóndigas (meatballs), papas con berberechos (potatoes with cockles), pork, and rabbit.
With no contemporary dishes or trendy drinks, El Perola thrives on history, authenticity, and a deep connection to Canarian tradition. Whether it’s the old-world ambience, the unchanged recipes, or the unique peanut shell ritual, this legendary bar continues to be a cherished landmark in the Canary Islands.
