The town of Garachico, in the north of Tenerife, has been officially recognised as the happiest town in the Canary Islands, according to a new national study that highlights the most joyful places to live and visit across Spain.
Garachico is the only Canarian location to make the 2025 ranking, securing 36th place on the list of the 39 happiest towns in the country. The study praises the town’s exceptional climate, its famously welcoming residents, and its calm, peaceful atmosphere, all qualities that make it stand out on a list largely dominated by towns in Andalucía, Cantabria, and Asturias.
The survey, carried out by Azucarera, measures happiness based on several key factors: natural surroundings, climate, architectural beauty, and quality of life. Garachico scored highly in all these areas, making it a clear favourite in the Canary Islands.
Founded in the late 15th century by a Genoese banker, Garachico was once a key port in the trade routes between Europe and the Spanish colonies in the Americas. Today, it’s known for its cobbled streets, historic buildings, charming harbour, and the spectacular natural pools of El Caletón, which attract visitors from around the world every year.
This latest recognition further strengthens Garachico’s reputation as one of Tenerife’s most picturesque and welcoming destinations and a place where both residents and tourists can soak up a unique mix of history, beauty, and community spirit.
