Two National Police agents have saved the life of a baby boy who was not breathing after choking on a piece of food while he was with his parents in the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz in Tenerife.
According to a police press release this afternoon (Thursday), the agents were at the plaza when a man came running towards them with a baby in his arms, accompanied by his parents, who being on holiday from Bulgaria and not speaking Spanish, were worryingly pointing to the boy's throat.
Upon confirming that the baby was indeed not breathing, had turned a bluish colour, and was not gesturing, the officers called an ambulance while they carried out a prior assessment of the minor's condition.
While waiting for the ambulance, the agents, trained in first aid, realised that what the young child was suffering from was choking, so they decided to perform the Heimlich manoeuvre on him, making him expel a piece of food that had caused him to choke.
However, even after the food was out, the young boy still wasn’t breathing correctly, so officers decided not to wait any longer for the ambulance, but instead took him to the nearest medical centre so that he could receive specialized care from health personnel.
Once there, and together with the parents, the medical services it was necessary to carry out specific checks on the baby's state of health to avoid complications, for which they recommended he be taken to the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Hospital.
Doing so, the boy and his parents went by ambulance whilst the agent gave them a police escort to the door, where he was admitted to the paediatric wing of the Hospital and received the necessary care and, according to the report, is in a stable condition and out of danger.
