Tenerife Horse Rescue, the island’s largest eco-animal sanctuary, is thrilled to announce the return of The Animal March for its third year. This virtual exercise challenge invites participants to walk, run, or hike 100 kilometres during March to fundraise for the sanctuary’s more than 500 animals who rely on its care.
Since its launch in 2023, The Animal March has raised an astounding €50,000 making a lasting impact by helping the sanctuary secure vital land, expand its facilities, and prepare for a future of community-driven animal welfare.
This year, Tenerife Horse Rescue aims to take ‘The Animal March’ to new heights, setting its sights on building a dedicated veterinary clinic to provide on-site care and training opportunities for local interns. They also plan to create an education centre to engage local schools and organisations, fostering a culture of compassion and action for animal welfare.
Tenerife Horse Rescue has come leaps and bounds since it first opened in 2018, with 2024 being a huge year for the sanctuary. A viral campaign targeting Ed Sheeran and his team ended with a visit from Ed’s manager, Stuart Camp, who decided to sponsor the building of a ‘track system’: the first of its kind built to encourage natural behaviour for horses on the island.
“The support we’ve received over the past two years has been nothing short of incredible,” said Emma Greenfield, founder of Tenerife Horse Rescue. “Now, as we prepare for the third year of The Animal March, we’re building on that momentum to push for even bigger changes. Every step, every donation, is helping us create a sustainable future for the animals of Tenerife.”
Why Join The Animal March?
Tenerife Horse Rescue is a haven for animals of all kinds, from horses to pigs, guinea pigs, and even turtles, rescued from abuse and neglect. Built from recycled materials and clay, the sanctuary operates sustainably while creating a safe, loving environment for animals and a thriving community of volunteers.
Participants in The Animal March can complete their kilometres however they choose, walking, running, hiking, or even cycling, either solo or with friends (furry ones included!). Along the way, participants can join a supportive online community through the event’s Facebook group and receive a free t-shirt and welcome pack to kickstart their fundraising efforts.
A Community Effort
Hundreds of animal lovers from around the world have already signed up, with local businesses like Cactus Co-living and Canary Green joining forces to champion this cause. The collective effort is a testament to the growing community of people dedicated to making a difference.
Emma added, “The challenges we’ve faced, like last year’s water crisis, are daunting, but they’ve also shown us how resilient and supportive our community is. The Animal March is not just a fundraiser; it’s a movement. It’s a chance for everyone to play a part in protecting these animals and building a better future for them.”
