A 19-year-old man is facing a fast-track court hearing after running over a child in Arguineguín and fleeing the scene in a stolen car. The incident happened on 26th August at 6:40 pm at the junction of Calle Miguel Marrero and Avenida de Los Pescadores, near Bar Arguineguín.
Witnesses said the vehicle was being driven recklessly when it struck the child as they crossed the road.
The driver briefly stopped and, along with a passenger, got out to check on the child, who did not appear to have suffered serious injuries. Moments later, however, he jumped back into the car and sped away towards the Barrio Marinero area.
Emergency services treated the victim at the side of the road before transferring them to San Roque Meloneras Hospital for further assessment. The youngster was accompanied throughout by their parents.
Local Police were able to identify the passenger, who admitted that the driver was a resident of the town. Three days later, the suspect presented himself at the police station, confessing that he had driven the car without a licence.
He also admitted that the vehicle was not his, claiming it had been lent to him by an acquaintance. Investigators later confirmed that the car had been stolen on 12th August and was later recovered in Playa de las Carpinteras, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, by the National Police.
The young man has been formally charged with offences against road safety and is due to appear before the Court of San Bartolomé de Tirajana on 2nd September for a fast-track trial.
