Teenage Tourist Found Dead off the Coast of Gran Canaria
A 15-year-old holidaymaker has been found dead in the waters near the Puerto Rico dock, in the south of Gran Canaria. The body of the Norwegian teenager was discovered yesterday morning (Saturday) and has since been formally identified by her mother.
The cause of death is not yet known. After identification, the body was transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for the required autopsy.
Body Found Floating Near Harbour
The girl’s body was found floating in the sea between the port area and Balito, after a passer-by raised the alarm.
Emergency services were alerted at around 9:00am, when the 112 call centre received a report of a body in the water approximately 40-50 metres from the coast.
Investigation Underway
Officers from the Guardia Civil have confirmed that a judicial police team is now at the scene investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, and are not ruling out any hypothesis in the course of its investigation.
The teenager was staying with her family in apartments in the Barranco Agua La Perra area, in the south of the island.
At this stage, no further details have been released, and the exact cause of the incident remains unclear.
