Teen arrested for violent robbery of 89-year-old pensioner in Gran Canaria

The National Police have arrested a teenager accused of violently robbing an 89-year-old pensioner shortly after he withdrew his monthly pension from a cash machine in the Triana area of in Las Palmas in Gran Canaria.
The incident happened on Thursday evening, when the elderly victim was assaulted from behind, pulled to the ground and robbed of €900 in cash. Officers responding to the alert assisted the man, who suffered minor injuries.
The pensioner told police he had just taken the money from an ATM when the attacker struck, seizing the cash before fleeing the scene.
Key clue leads investigators to suspect
During their enquiries, officers collected witness statements and recovered a mobile phone dropped by the suspect as he ran away. Inside they found a youth transport card, enabling police to quickly establish the identity of the alleged assailant.
Hours later, the suspect was located and arrested at the shelter where he resides. A security search recovered €800 hidden in a black sweatshirt matching witness descriptions.
The minor is due to appear before the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office in Las Palmas as the investigation continues.
