A taxi driver has been violently assaulted in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, suffering a fractured cheekbone in an incident that has reignited calls for improved safety measures for taxi professionals on the island.
According to a statement posted by Élite Taxi Tenerife on their official Facebook page, the attack took place in the early hours of the morning, at the end of the driver’s shift. The driver, who was operating in the capital, fortunately had a security camera installed in the vehicle, which may help identify the perpetrators.
The association expressed concern for drivers who are not able to afford such protective equipment: “In this case, our colleague has a camera and the attackers can be located, but what about those who can’t afford one?”
Élite Taxi Tenerife has once again appealed to the Santa Cruz City Council for support, criticising the lack of response to repeated requests for financial assistance to install security cameras and protective screens in vehicles.
“We’ve been asking Councillor Evelyn Alonso for two years for a subsidy for cameras and partitions,” the post states. “She keeps telling us to wait. The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, is aware, but meanwhile, we continue to risk our lives. It’s impossible to work safely at night under these conditions.”
The incident highlights a worrying trend of increased aggression toward taxi drivers in the Canary Islands, particularly during nighttime hours, and has intensified pressure on local authorities to act.
Police are investigating the incident, and Élite Taxi Tenerife has confirmed they will support their colleague through legal proceedings.
