AEMET has extended yellow weather warnings across the Canary Islands today, Tuesday, with strong winds and rough seas expected to affect much of the archipelago.
Cloudier skies are forecast in the north of the mountainous islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria), with a slight chance of light, occasional rain, particularly during the early and late hours of the day. Elsewhere, conditions will remain largely clear or only lightly cloudy.
Moderate north-easterly trade winds will dominate, with intervals of strong gusts and the possibility of very strong gusts in exposed areas. Inland parts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as south-east and north-west slopes of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, are most at risk, especially overnight and again later in the day.
At sea, conditions will be challenging. North-easterly winds are expected at force 5 to 6, occasionally reaching force 7 or 8, bringing rough to very rough seas. A north-easterly swell of 3 to 4 metres is forecast, easing to 2 to 3 metres by early morning.
Island-by-Island Forecast for Tuesday 14th April 2026:
Tenerife
Generally clear with some cloud in the north. Temperatures will rise slightly in mid-altitude and high areas, while coastal areas in the south remain stable. Strong trade winds are expected, with occasional very strong gusts in the south-east and far north-west. Western areas will see lighter breezes, and central peaks will experience light north-easterly winds.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.
Gran Canaria
Northern areas will see cloudier skies, clearing somewhat around midday, with a low chance of light rain in mid-altitude areas early and late. The rest of the island will remain mostly clear. Temperatures will be steady in northern and eastern coastal areas, rising slightly elsewhere, particularly overnight in higher zones. Strong winds and occasional very strong gusts are likely on south-east and north-west slopes, while south-west areas will see lighter breezes.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 21°C.
Lanzarote
Mostly clear skies, although cloud will be more noticeable in the north at the start and end of the day. Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, with a slight rise in maximums. Strong trade winds are expected at times, with a chance of very strong gusts in southern areas.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 20°C.
Fuerteventura
Largely clear with some cloud intervals early and late in the day. Temperatures will see little change, though daytime highs may edge up slightly. Locally strong winds are expected.
General temperature range: Low of 16°C and high of 21°C.
Residents and visitors are advised to take extra care in exposed areas, particularly where strong gusts and rough sea conditions may pose a risk.
