A light haze is set to drift into parts of the archipelago today, Thursday, alongside rising temperatures and varying cloud cover, according to the latest forecasts for the Canary Islands from AEMET.

The haze is expected to affect higher ground in the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura first, before spreading across Gran Canaria and Tenerife later in the day.

Skies will vary throughout the day, ranging from clear to partly cloudy depending on the time and location. Winds will blow mainly from the north-east at low levels, occasionally strengthening in south-east and north-west facing areas, where some very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.

Sea conditions

At sea, north-easterly winds of force 5 to 6 are expected across much of the region. Conditions will be rough at times, with moderate to heavy swell and a northerly sea reaching up to two metres. In the western islands, waves could build to three metres later in the day, turning north-westerly.

Island-by-island outlook for Thursday 16th April 2026:

Lanzarote
Mostly clear skies, with some cloud in the north early and late in the day. Light haze over higher areas. Daytime temperatures rising, overnight temperatures largely unchanged. Moderate north-easterly winds.
General temperature range: Low of 16°C and high of 26°C.

Fuerteventura
Largely clear, with cloud at times in the north and west early and late. Light haze in higher areas. Temperatures rising by day, with little change overnight. Moderate north-easterly winds, becoming stronger at times in the Jandía peninsula later.
General temperature range: Low of 15°C and high of 25°C.

Gran Canaria
Mostly clear or sunny, though the north may see cloud below 600–800 metres early and late. There is a slight chance of light, scattered drizzle in northern mid-level areas at dawn. High cloud may appear later. Light haze in higher areas, possibly becoming more noticeable by evening. Temperatures rising, slightly along the coast and more markedly inland and at altitude, with the possibility of a notable increase on the peaks. Light to moderate north-easterly winds, with stronger gusts possible in exposed south-east and north-west areas. Lighter easterly winds inland and southerly winds on higher ground, strengthening after midday.
General temperature range: Low of 17°C and high of 22°C.

Tenerife
Mostly clear, with some high cloud developing after midday. The north will be cloudier below 900–1,100 metres during the first half of the day and again later on. A small chance of light, scattered drizzle in northern mid-level areas early on. Light haze expected at higher altitudes later. Temperatures rising slightly on the coast and more noticeably inland and in the hills, with the potential for a marked increase on the peaks. Moderate north-easterly winds in lower areas, with stronger gusts possible in the far north-west and south-east. Breezes more common in the west. Inland winds light from the east, while central high ground will see moderate south-westerly winds, occasionally strong with the risk of very strong gusts around midday.
General temperature range: Low of 18°C and high of 24°C.

Please remember:
It’s important to be aware that the Canaries consist of micro-climates across the islands due to the mountainous areas. This means all forecasts and temperatures are general for the island, and not location specific. It will generally be cooler at altitude up mountains, and warmer in sheltered coastal areas, and can be very different just a few kilometres away.
