A man has been arrested in connection with a serious hit-and-run incident in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that left a Guardia Civil officer injured before the suspect fled the scene. Officers arrested the suspect following a lengthy and complex investigation.
The incident dates back to 3rd July 2024, when traffic officers were called to an accident in the Pedro Hidalgo area of the city, near the GC-309 road linking to the GC-3. At the time, officers had attempted to stop a car after noticing what they described as “irregular and potentially dangerous driving”.
Instead of complying, the driver ignored police signals and sped off resulting in a police chase. During the pursuit, he carried out a dangerous reverse manoeuvre against the flow of traffic, crashing into a Guardia Civil motorcycle involved in the chase. The officer riding the motorcycle was injured, and both vehicles sustained damage.
The suspect’s car was eventually immobilised due to the impact, but he abandoned the vehicle and escaped on foot, initially evading capture.
Investigation Led to Identification
Following the incident, specialist investigators launched an operation to identify and locate the driver. Evidence gathered from officers at the scene, witness statements and video footage allowed authorities to confirm the suspect’s identity.
Despite early difficulties in locating him, the investigation remained active. The man was finally arrested on 12th March 2026 after a targeted surveillance operation carried out by officers from the Traffic Unit’s Road Safety division.
Multiple Serious Charges
The suspect has been formally notified that he is under investigation for several offences, including dangerous driving, driving without a valid licence due to loss of all points, leaving the scene of an accident without assisting the injured, damage to an official vehicle, and assaulting a law enforcement officer.
A full police report has now been submitted to the Juzgado de Instrucción Número 3 de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, which is overseeing the case.
