Start spreading the news… the theme for Carnival 2023 is New York

With the Santa Cruz de Tenerife carnival being later than usual this year to avoid Covid restrictions, the vote has already taken place for the theme for next year's event which will be held at the traditional time of year between January 20th and February 26th and coincides with the new flights that are operating from Tenerife South directly to New York three times a week.

After an online vote between three final proposals, it has been announced that the theme for Carnival 2023 is going to be New York, which won with 44% of the online vote organized by the city council, through the Autonomous Organization for Fiestas and Recreational Activities (OAFAR).

In total, the winning proposal registered a total of 1,730 votes, which is 44.6% of popular support over the other options, which were 'La Televisión' with 1,557 votes, and 'A sustainable world' with 593 votes.

The Councillor for Fiestas, Alfonso Cabello, expressed his "joy at already having a theme that will see major creativity from all the people and groups linked to our most international festival on the island”.

The mayor of Santa Cruz, José Manuel Bermúdez, recalled how we have “gone through the longest period between carnivals and now it's time for the shortest, which is an organizational challenge because the 2023 Carnival will be launched in just six months’ time."

He added that the beginning of a new edition is “good news” both for the carnival goers and for participants, as well as the “economic dynamism of Santa Cruz”, since it is "not only a festival of international tourist interest but also a point of reference for the cultural and leisure industry on the island”.

Lastly, Alfonso Cabello announced that OAFAR will open the period for people to submit their design of the 2023 poster on August 1st and will keep it open until September 15th.
