The dismembered body of a 56-year-old woman who had been reported missing in Fuerteventura has been found, and her 22-year-old son has been arrested on suspicion of her murder.

Officers from the Guardia Civil discovered the body of Belgian national Katty O. yesterday (Friday 8th May), at the island’s main waste treatment facility and landfill site in Zurita. Following the discovery, Judicial Police officers detained her son as the alleged perpetrator.

Her body has been transferred to the Institute of Legal Medicine, where a post-mortem examination will determine the exact cause and timing of her death.

Disappearance in Corralejo

Katty had been missing since the beginning of the month. She was last seen in Corralejo, in the municipality of La Oliva.

A missing persons report was filed on 4th May, prompting an active search operation coordinated by the Guardia Civil. In recent days, investigators had begun focusing their enquiries on the Zurita area as various lines of investigation narrowed.

The tragic discovery was made on Friday morning at the island landfill, officially known as the Complejo Ambiental de Zurita.

Arrest and ongoing investigation

At the same time as the body was recovered, officers arrested the victim’s son as the main suspect in the case. While investigators are continuing to examine all possible scenarios, evidence gathered over recent days reportedly points to the alleged direct involvement of the family member in her death.

Authorities have not yet released details about the cause of death or a possible motive. It will be the autopsy that determines whether the death was violent and establishes when it occurred.

The suspect remains in police custody and is expected to appear before a judge in the coming hours.

The case remains under active investigation.
