A serious traffic accident this morning (Friday) forced the partial closure of the TF-1 in south Tenerife, bringing traffic to a standstill on one of the island’s busiest routes.

The crash occurred at around 10:00am near the Las Chafiras industrial estate, in San Miguel de Abona, on the carriageway heading towards Santiago del Teide. Officers from the Guardia Civil Traffic Unit were forced to close lanes immediately to secure the area and allow emergency services to reach the area.

Early reports indicate a high-impact rear-end collision in which a dark-coloured Opel Astra ended up partially underneath a small van, underlining the force of the impact. Three vehicles were involved in the crash, further complicating recovery work and worsening delays.

The accident quickly intensified the usual congestion on the TF-1, with severe queues reported from key access points such as Guaza, Oroteanda and Las Chafiras, areas already prone to heavy traffic during peak hours.

According to the CECOES 1-1-2 Emergency Coordination Centre, three people were injured in the collision. All suffered minor injuries and required hospital treatment.

Firefighters from the Las Chafiras station were also sent to the roadside and had to rescue one of the occupants who was trapped inside their vehicle and unable to get out without assistance.

Several other traffic accidents were reported across the north of Tenerife today, including on the TF-5, TF-21 and TF-217, particularly around the Santa Úrsula area. These incidents caused more injuries and led to further delays for drivers.
