A 41-year-old climber has died after falling from a height in a ravine in Tenerife, according to the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The incident happened on Saturday evening in the Cuevas de Igonse area of Candelaria at around 7:30pm. Emergency services received a call reporting that a climber had got stuck in a difficult location and needed rescuing

Response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, including firefighters and officers from the Guardia Civil. However, shortly after they arrived, the climber fell from the cliff wall into an area that could not be reached by land due to the difficult terrain.

Because of the approaching sunset and the inaccessibility of the location, the Guardia Civil requested assistance from the Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) helicopter, with the operation scheduled for early Sunday morning.

Local Police officers also attended the scene, while drones operated by Tenerife firefighters located the victim’s body. Authorities confirmed that he had suffered injuries incompatible with life.

On Sunday morning, a rescue team from the GES helicopter and members of the Guardia Civil travelled to the area. Once weather conditions allowed the aircraft to operate safely, the team carried out the recovery of the body.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
