Prosecutors in Gran Canaria are calling for two former managers of a holiday apartment complex community in Playa del Inglés (Gran Canaria) to be jailed over an alleged fraud involving more than €100,000.

The case centres on the Australia Apartments, where the pair were responsible for running the resort on behalf of the property owners. Investigators say that between 2008 and 2011, they worked together to take money from the owners’ community and use it for themselves.

At the time, both were in charge of the company that operated the apartments as tourist accommodation.

What they’re accused of

The prosecution claims the two took the money through a series of bank transactions, including dozens of cheques, promissory notes, and invoices, which they allegedly issued to themselves or linked businesses without a valid reason.

Because of the amount involved, the alleged crime is considered an “aggravated” case of misappropriation of funds.

What the prosecutor wants

The Public Prosecutor is asking the court to sentence both defendants to:

  • 3 years and 3 months in prison each
  • Fines and a ban on holding similar roles in future
  • Repayment of €107,736.10 to the property owners

A trial date is expected to be set once the court has reviewed all the evidence.
