A TUI flight to Gran Canaria declared a medical emergency yesterday afternoon, Sunday, after a pregnant passenger required urgent care mid-flight.

According to reports from Spanish Air Traffic Controllers, the crew alerted Enaire, the Canary Islands air traffic control centre, who immediately implemented an emergency protocol.

Flight TFL1637 from Amsterdam was given priority clearance, including a continuous high-speed descent, into Las Palmas airport, while other approaching flights to Gran Canaria were diverted to ensure the plane’s swift and safe arrival.

Meanwhile, Gran Canaria Airport activated a medical response team, preparing paramedics on the ground so they could attend to the passenger as soon as the aircraft landed.

Air traffic controllers later shared on social media that the quick actions taken “saved her life”, and wished the traveller a full and speedy recovery. They also expressed gratitude to other flight crews in the area who assisted by facilitating the emergency manoeuvres.

No further details about the passenger’s condition have been released at this time.
