A passenger has been ordered to pay €15,000 after violent behaviour on a Ryanair flight from Dublin to Lanzarote forced the pilot to divert and make an unplanned landing in Porto, Portugal.

A court in Dublin ruled that the traveller was directly responsible for the disruption after he assaulted fellow passengers and members of the cabin crew during the flight. The captain decided to divert the aircraft for the safety of everyone on board, where the disruptive passenger was removed by authorities.

Ryanair said the ruling reinforces its zero-tolerance policy on unruly behaviour, stressing that passengers and crew must be able to fly “in a comfortable environment, free from unnecessary disturbances”.

The airline added that it will continue to take firm action against disruptive passengers, noting that sanctions can include heavy fines, removal from flights, and future bans.

According to the company, the judgment “highlights the serious consequences faced by anyone who disrupts a flight.”
