A passenger arriving at Gran Canaria Airport has been arrested after police discovered one kilogram of methamphetamine hidden inside a checked suitcase.
The arrest was made by National Police officers as part of Operation Heisenberg, an ongoing effort to prevent drugs from being brought into the Canary Islands through commercial air routes.
According to police, the suspect arrived on a flight from Madrid on 29th May. During routine inspections of passengers and their luggage, officers found four packages concealed inside a suitcase containing a total of one kilogram of the synthetic drug methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth.
The operation forms part of wider efforts to combat drug trafficking into the Canary Islands. Police say investigations have shown that a high proportion of methamphetamine destined for the archipelago is transported from various parts of mainland Europe using regular airline connections.
The suspect has been handed over to the judicial authorities, and the investigation remains ongoing as officers work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.
