Candelaria, on the east coast of Tenerife, will welcome more than 100,000 pilgrims today and tomorrow (14th–15th August) for the bank holiday Friday which celebrates the Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, Patron Saint of the Canary Islands.
Authorities have confirmed that only two routes are permitted for the pilgrimage this year: the historic 21-kilometre Camino Viejo trail from La Laguna, and the TF-28 road. Walking through the forests or along the TF-1 motorway is strictly banned due to wildfire risk and safety concerns.
To make travel easier, bus company Titsa has introduced additional services. Lines 120 and 122 from Santa Cruz will run more frequently, while a special Line 522 will link La Laguna with Candelaria via the motorway network. In the town itself, all buses will operate from Avenida de Los Menceyes, near the old station.
Festivities begin this evening with the re-enactment of the discovery of the Virgin, followed by fireworks, music, and processions around the Basilica. Tomorrow, the main day of celebrations, includes a civic procession, a midday mass led by the new Bishop of Tenerife, and the traditional display of firecrackers in the square.
The weather remains hot, with temperatures still climbing above 30°C, and stronger trade winds expected tomorrow. Visitors are advised to stay hydrated, use sun protection, and be prepared for large crowds throughout the two-day event.
