New protocol to prevent sexual harassment in Tenerife nightlife venues unveiled

In a landmark development, the Cabildo of Tenerife has announced the successful drafting of the inaugural protocol designed to prevent sexual harassment in nightlife venues. The initiative, crafted through consensus and collaborative efforts with the island's local councils, is poised to set a new standard for safeguarding people in the vibrant nightlife scene.

Initiated on February 13th, 2023, the comprehensive protocol emerged through a meticulous process involving experienced local institutions and qualified technical personnel. Patricia León, the insular director of Equality, highlighted the groundbreaking nature of this endeavour in a statement issued on Thursday. León expressed optimism, stating, "This is a pioneering initiative that aims to provide even more tools to prevent and combat cases of sexual harassment."

The initial impetus came from the Puerto de la Cruz City Council, the Adeje City Council, and the El Rosario City Council. Subsequently, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the Organic Gender Violence Unit (IASS) rallied behind the cause, demonstrating a united front against sexual harassment in nightlife venues.

Can all venues adopt this measure?

As the drafting process advances, the protocol's scope will expand to include the participation of other municipalities across the island and businesses within the sector from outside these municipalities that choose to adopt it.

The draft is currently undergoing review by participating local councils and will progress to three regional tables. These tables, convened by the Cabildo, will include companies and business organizations from the sector, working in collaboration with local councils. The objective is to engage the business community and gather valuable input to enhance the efficacy of the protocol.

In the final phase, the protocol will undergo scrutiny and approval by the Cabildo, ensuring that it aligns with the collective vision and commitment to addressing and preventing sexual harassment in nightlife establishments.

Following official approval, an extensive information and communication campaign will be launched to encourage voluntary adherence by nightlife venues and other councils across the island. This marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and more inclusive nightlife environment in Tenerife.
