A new boutique hotel with just 14 rooms is set to be built next to the sea in El Cotillo, one of the most popular coastal areas in northern Fuerteventura.
The project is promoted by property group Montebalito, and will be located beside Playa del Muelle Chico, an area well known for its fishing heritage, relaxed atmosphere and seafront views. Plans include a restaurant, swimming pool, sun terrace and rooftop area for guests.
Unlike the large tourist resorts commonly found across the Canary Islands, the development will focus on a smaller and more exclusive style of accommodation. The aim is to offer a quieter and more personalised experience that blends with the character of El Cotillo and its natural surroundings.
El Cotillo has become increasingly popular with visitors looking to avoid busier tourist areas. Known for its beaches, surfing and slower pace of life, the village has grown from a traditional fishing community into one of the island’s most sought-after destinations.
Its location close to Corralejo, one of Fuerteventura’s main tourist centres, is also seen as a major advantage for the project. Developers believe there is a growing demand for smaller hotels that focus more on privacy, comfort and local character rather than large-scale tourism.
The plans come at a time when tourism development in the Canary Islands continues to spark debate over the future direction of the sector. In recent years, more developers have begun exploring boutique hotels and lower-capacity accommodation instead of traditional large resort complexes.
