A major new roundabout has opened in Las Chafiras, above the TF-1 motorway, marking a significant step forward for traffic flow in southern Tenerife.

Touted as the largest in the Canary Islands, the €25 million project is designed to ease congestion for the more than 85,000 vehicles that pass through the area each day.

Although the interchange is not yet fully complete, the main roundabout officially opened yesterday, Tuesday 22nd July, after a carefully planned, multi-phase operation. The full project, including final access roads and connectors, is expected to be finished by the end of 2025, but this is the major step towards easing traffic flow.

Canary Islands Public Works Councillor Pablo Rodríguez described the opening as a “historic moment” for the island, following years of delays caused by environmental and infrastructure challenges. Recent efforts have sped up progress significantly.

Rosa Dávila, President of the Tenerife Cabildo, highlighted that the new roundabout will triple the current traffic capacity. She also confirmed plans to widen the TF-1 to three lanes between San Isidro and Las Americas, further improving mobility in the region.
