A cayuco carrying close to 200 people was intercepted off the coast of south Tenerife yesterday morning (Saturday), and escorted safely to the port of Granadilla by Maritime Rescue, who confirmed that all occupants were in apparently good health.
According to reports, an alert was raised at 7.30am after a caller reported a migrant boat off the coast of Las Galletas in the south of the island.
The rescue vessel Salvamar Alpheratz and the Helimer 201 helicopter were immediately deployed to locate and assess the situation.
Given the rough sea conditions in the area, with winds of around 20 knots and waves between two and three metres, crews determined that the safest option was to guide the cayuco to port in Granadilla. The vessel arrived safely at 10.30am.
The Salvamar Menkalinam was also mobilised to provide additional support and accompanied the cayuco to ensure a secure berthing. All occupants are now being processed by the red Cross and authorities for reception centres.
