AEMET has updated its forecast for the Canary Islands, issuing more yellow weather warnings for strong winds and hazardous sea conditions. The alert comes as gusts of up to 90km/h are expected, along with rough seas reaching force 7 in inter-island channels.
Winds set to strengthen from Sunday evening
The unsettled weather is forecast to intensify from tomorrow afternoon (Sunday April 12th) and continue throughout Monday.
The areas most at risk from strong winds include higher ground and exposed coastal slopes. In Gran Canaria, this includes the mountains and south-east, while in Tenerife, the north-west, the south and south-east, as well as high ridge areas are expected to be most affected.
Similar conditions are forecast across the western islands. In La Gomera, strong winds will mainly impact higher areas and south-east and western slopes. In La Palma, warnings focus on the mountains and south-east and north-west extremes, while in El Hierro, the strongest winds are expected in elevated areas and along the southern coast.
From midnight into Monday, north-easterly winds will become more widespread, also affecting inland parts of Lanzarote.
Dangerous sea conditions expected
Sea conditions are expected to worsen significantly, with north-easterly winds of 50 to 61km/h (force 7), particularly south of the Anaga–Agaete channel and off the south-east coast of Gran Canaria.
Residents and visitors are being urged to take extra care along coastal areas.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, combined northerly swells could bring waves of between four and five metres. Offshore along the eastern coasts, force 7 winds are also possible.
Timeline of warnings:
- Sunday, April 12th (from 6pm): Strong gusts of up to 90km/h expected in high and exposed areas across several islands.
- Monday, April 13th: Continued strong north-easterly winds across mountainous islands and inland areas of Lanzarote. Coastal warnings remain in place for El Hierro, La Gomera and western La Palma until at least midday.
